【作者小传】刘禹锡（772—842），字梦得，号宾客，洛阳（今河南省洛阳市）人。唐德宗贞元九年（793）进士，同年登博学宏词科。贞元十一年以文登吏部取士科，授太子校书。后历任监察御史、屯田员外郎。顺宗永贞元年（805），王叔文集团的革新运动失败，刘受牵连被贬为连州（今广东连县）刺史，赴任途中再贬为郎州（今湖南省常德市）司马。宪宗元和十年（815）应召回长安，旋又贬出，历任连州，夔州（今四川省奉节县）、和州（今安徽省和县）刺史。文宗大和元年（827）返回洛阳，宦途始告平稳。晚年任太子宾客，分司东都（洛阳），加检校礼部尚书。有《刘梦得文集》四十卷。

刘禹锡自幼好学，攻读经典之外，于九流百氏，乃至书法、天文、医学，亦广泛涉猎。其文学创作，以诗歌最著，白居易说他“文之神妙，莫先于诗”（《刘白唱和集解》）。在古文运动中，他占有重要地位，当时李翱、韩愈主盟文坛，引之以为伦辈。刘说自己“长在论”，他的论文条分理析，论证周密，文彩沛然。散文则思路清晰，简洁晓畅。

【题解】《陋室铭》一文，刘禹锡诸集均未见收录，近年有人疑为伪作。但此文前代屡见献文记载，内容又与作者行事相合，似仍以视为刘作为宜。本文作于和州任上（824—826）。《历阳典录》：“陋室，在州治内，唐和州刺史刘禹锡建，有铭，柳公权书碑。”

铭是古代刻于金石上的一种押韵文体，多用于歌颂功德与昭申鉴戒。《陋室铭》以寥寥八十一字，谱出一曲陋室颂歌，流芳千载。开头以山水起兴，仙龙一经点出，陋室主人情趣即显，读者则已入佳境。随之而来，苔绿草青，是淡雅之色，又是生机勃勃之景；弄琴读经，从容之态可掬，闲逸之致堪羡；诸葛庐、子云亭，含着引古代高士为同调的自豪；以孔子云作结，则表示对最高道德规范着意追求的坚定信念。文中有譬喻，有对比，有白描，有隐寓，有用典，句句如金石掷地，又自然流畅，一气呵成，曲虽终而余音不绝，意更绵远。使人感到不只是写了陋室，连陋室主人遇变不惊，处危不屈，坚持节操的形象也隐隐现出。

【翻译】

山不在于它的高低，有仙人居留便会出名；水不在于深浅，有蛟龙潜藏就会显得神灵。这虽然是一间陋室，但我的道德高尚却到处传闻。苔痕布满阶石，一片碧绿；草色映入帘帷，满室葱青。往来谈笑的都是博学之士，浅薄无识之徒不会到此。可以随心抚弄素琴，可以潜心阅读佛教。没有嘈杂的音乐扰乱听觉，没有繁忙的公务催劳伤神。这间陋室如同南阳诸葛庐，又如西蜀子云亭。正如孔子所说：“有什么理由认为它是粗陋的"呢？”（李祚唐）
