Legacy of great leader

There have been nine secretary generals of the United Nations since the first one was appointed in 1946.But somehow, Kofi Annan has been the one that people tend to remember the best.

Perhaps it’s the fact that Annan, born in Ghana, was the first black African to ever hold the job, or that he won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2001. Or, most likely, as The New York Times put it, Annan redefined the UN”.

Annan, who passed away on Aug 18 at age 80, spent 10 years of his life as UN secretary-general.

During those 10 years-from 1997 to 2006-the world was at its worst. This period saw the NATO bombing Yugoslavia(南斯拉夫) in 1999,the Sept 11 attacks of 2001,and the US’s invasion(侵略) of Iraq in 2003.

On its own, the UN has little power. However, Annan combined that power with his own to achieve great things. He kept the world from falling apart from attacks and wars. He also fought for women’s rights and the educational rights of children, and fought against the spread of HIV in Africa.

It was because of these things that he and the UN were awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2001,for their work toward“a better organized and a more peaceful world”.

Annan also put “people” at the center or everything the UN does. “He took the trouble to relate to(建立联系) others-young or old, senior or junior, ambassador(大使) or security guard(保安)”wrote Indian diplomat Shashi Tharoor on the South China Morning Post when remembering Annan. “He listened patiently; he always made the time [to aks] about your family or some [other thing] in your life.”

Maybe what Annan did was more than just “redefine” the UN. Indeed, as Antonio Guterres, current secretary-general of the UN, said: “In many ways, Kofi Annan was the UN.”

Leap into a new year

After years of hard work, you’ve finally made it to senior high.

You’ve probably imagined what it feels like to be a senior ever since you were a kindergartener .And now the time has finally come.

This stage in your education is when your intelligence is really put to the test. The next three years aren’t going to be easy. But everything valuable in life is worth fighting for. Exciting challenges await you in the coming years as you discover amazing abilities you never knew you had.

The final stage of our high school education is also when our true character is built.

Your time spent as a senior is when you’ll finally figure out what you want to do for the rest of your life. As US activist Martin Luther King once said, “Intelligence plus character- that is the goal of true education.” There are countless chances just waiting to be taken once you finish your education, the world is your oyster if you put in enough effort.

And as you are getting closer and closer to becoming an adult, you will find yourself given more responsibilities, both at school and at home.

You are no longer a junior of the world, but a senior. And being a senior means that others will now look up to you for inspiration and guidance.

Beginning this new chapter isn’t just about working hard, however-you will also discover brand new friendships that could last a lifetime.

Just look around your classroom and you’ll see the faces of teenagers who are just like you. They are probably feeling scared yet excited as they set off on this mysterious journey.

Your first goal should be to introduce yourself to every one of your classmates. With a good friend by your side, there’s no need to be scared of anything.

The most important thing you must remember throughout the next three years, however, is to never stop dreaming big. As British physicist Stephen Hawking put it, “ Remember to look up at stars and not down at your feet.”

Top tips for a new year

As the new semester is here again, it’s time to head back to school. But it’s different than it used to be because this time you need to go to a brand new place, meet new classmates, and go on a different journey.

While the worries of a new life in high school can be hard, they don’t have to be. Here, Teens has collected a few methods from high school graduates to help you deal with the new environment and gain as much as possible in the coming semester.

Hehaoyue,18,High School Affiliated To Nanjing Normal University:

My advice is to find your interest as soon as possible. I skimmed all my textbook at the beginning of Senior 1 and had a rough idea of every subject. Therefore, I was able to explore the field I was most passionate about, which made the study in senior high school easier,

However, life is not all about studying. Making friends with students you like matters as well. When coming into a new environment, you need to say hello to people around you and treat them sincerely.

Zhou Nuannuan,18,Hangzhou Xuejun High School:

Oscar Wilde once said, “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken”. This is what you should remember in senior high school.

You may meet all sorts of people with different opinions and attitudes towards life, but don’t doubt yourself if some of your values seem to conflict with theirs. Even though others spend every walking hour battling with test papers and exercises, you don’t need to be like them. Define yourself on your terms.

Jia Ruimin, 18, The Affiliated High School of Shanxi University:

I would say to take time to improve your handwriting. If you write messily on your answer sheet, it will be very difficult for a teacher to read the content. Good handwriting can help you make a better impression.

Develop this habit right now. After all, the choices you make during the first few weeks of a new semester can have long-lasting effects.

Enjoy the challenge of a new semester

The new semester is finally here, which means, of course, it’s time to return to school.

For many students across China, that also means having of leave home for the next several months and move into a school dormitory.

Being away from our family for a long time often leads to homesickness, however, a feeling that most students have experienced at some point.

A study by the UK’s National Union of Students found that up to 70 percent of UK students living away from home experience homesickness within their first few weeks of being away.

But homesickness isn’t just a feeling of sadness that happens in our mind; it can also affect us physically.

“ you feel homesickness in your stomach-it’s an unease in which you feel uncomfortable, nervous, stressed… because you’re in a place or situation that’s not familiar,” Joshua Klapow, a professor of public health at the university of Alabama, US, told Huffpost.

According to Klapow, the body reacts physically when it’s placed in an unknown situation such as being separated from one’s familiar surroundings for a long time.

“it’s an evolutionary thing that makes us protect ourselves from danger when something is unknown,” he told Huffpost.

“When we think about home, we know that the sense of unknown… is not happening there, so we want to return.”

So, how can we overcome these physical reaction?

Ruth Hardy of the Guardian offered advice for students who are feeling the effects of being away from the safety of home.

“Try and establish routines(常规)quickly…This can make your new environment feel more stable and will hopefully make you feel more settled,” she wrote.

Making friends with others who are in your situation is also a great way to feel less homesick, according to Hardy.

The most important thing to remember, however, is that homesickness is completely normal and is nothing to be ashamed of.

And once it’s gone, you are free to enjoy the adventures and challenges of a brand new school year.
